Brief Astrological Overview
The study of astrology as we know it today began in Egypt, China, The Indus Valley, and Meso-America as long as 9,000 years ago. We are strongly influenced by the work of the Babylonians passed on to the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Persians.
As the study of the stars, planets and constellations gradually developed in each of the cultures, astrology was reserved for the use of kings and heads of state.
Charts of princes, kings and of coming wars/battles were prepared by highly educated astronomers and mathematicians (the Magi, for example). Such historical figures as Alexander the Great and Ptolemy (the great Greek mathematician) played significant roles in the Egyptian and Greek development.
In the 16th century (and perhaps as early as the 12th), astrology was taught as part of the curriculum at many universities including the University of Bologna (where Dante studied). By the 20th century psychiatrist Carl Jung was writing extensively about astrology as a psychological tool and using charts regularly in his practice.
